Indiana Jones!

Really fun movie!  Very much in keeping with the spirit of the original triology.  I thought it had more camp and tongue-in-cheek self-mockery; Josh disagrees.  They jam packed it with all the chases, explosions, gun fights, and tricky escapes one could hope for in a Saturday afternoon serial.

If perhaps the premise was a little more silly than usual, it was time well spent, and I'm certain to go see it again in theaters.

Current Mood: pleased
Current Music: Indiana Jones, of course!

Stars you didn't know were geeks

I had heard about Vin Disel from some of my fanboi/girl friends, but the others I did not know.

I thought this article was pretty neat

Bloody Mallory
I found this little gem on Comcast's Free On- Demand movie section.  Part of Fear.net

It's a French film dubbed (badly, as usual) into English.

It's a cross between Buffy and Buckaroo Banzai.  It's amusing and delightfully campy.

It's about a French governmental anti-paranormal ass kicking squad compsed of a tough as nails Buffy type, a 7' tall transvestite, and a mute, psychic young girl.  Their mission- a master demon has kidnapped the pope.

Changes in how we travel with extra batteries - FYI

On January 1, 2008, information about traveling with lithium batteries was posted on the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) website at http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/batteries.shtm. The information states that "Effective January 1, 2008, the Department of Transportation (DOT) through the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) will no longer allow loose lithium batteries in checked baggage."http://pchw-os.web.boeing.com/hw/notebooks/faqs.asp#batteriesandtravel

Are you SAD?

I found some regularly available lightbulbs that help me get through the dark winter months: GE Reveal lightbulbs.  They bill themselves as providing "clean light" that filters out the typical yellow light most light bulbs emit.  That horrible, dim yellow light that makes every room feel dark and depressing?  Yeah, that kind.

Last winter, I nearly went nuts with being able to turn on every light in the house, and have it still look dark.  I ruthlessly replaced every last one with the Reveal bulbs, and it felt like stepping out into sunshine.  Colors sparkled and the rooms were actually lit.

If you have SAD or even just light deprivation check out these bulbs.  They might be a tiny bit more expensive than others- like 80c a package, but they're available at grocery stores and so worth it.

Chiaspod and Just_aims- this one's for you

An interview with an 80-year-old woman

The local news station was interviewing an 80-year-old lady because she had just gotten married -- for the fourth time.

The interviewer asked her questions about her life, about what it felt like to be marrying again at 80, and then about her new husband's occupation.

'He's a funeral director,' she answered.

'Interesting,' the newsman thought.

He then asked her if she wouldn't mind telling him a little about her first three husbands and what they did for a living.

She paused for a few moments, needing time to reflect on all those years. After a short time, a smile came to her face and she answered proudly, explaining that she'd first married a banker when she was in her early 20's, then a circus ringmaster when in her 40's, later on a preacher when in her 60's, and now in her 80's, a funeral director.

The interviewer looked at her, quite astonished, and asked why she had married four men with such diverse careers.

She smiled and explained, 'I married one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, and four to go.'

Alien vs Predator: ReqWFT?
Josh convinced me that *this* AvP would be good.  I believed him.

It was very much a movie made by people who studied "Aliens" religiously and figured if they just used the same surefire plot devices they couldn't go wrong, only they got actors with absolutely no charisma and a silly script.  As hard as they were trying to be  "Aliens'  they were only about as successful at it as all those cheesy Star Empire type movies that came out after Star Wars- only with fewer golf carts and more stuff getting blowed up.

We laughed.  We cheered.  I just don't think it was at the parts the director intended.
Maybe worth a matinee if there's *nothing* else to do.

It was still better than the Transformers movie.  The difference is that AvP is at least mockable; the transformers was just awful.

Edited to add:  In the spirit of full disclosure I must admit that "Aliens" makes my list of top three favorite movies of all time.  I leave it to you, gentle reader, to decide how that might bias my perceptions.

Preposterous!

Hee!  Quote overheard from patron exiting after "National Treasure 2"

"That was the most preposterous thing I've ever seen!"

I lol'd.  He must not have seen the first movie.

It was fun in the same poor-man's-Indiana-Jones way as the first one.  A pleasant way to pass the time, but don't leave your suspension of disbelief pills at home.

We also saw "Golden Compass", which was beautiful!
They did keep to the spirit of the book, if not to the exact letter.

I don't know anything about the contracts and whatnot, but I suspect the rest of the series won't be made.  It just isn't doing very well at the box office.  The books themselves are really very dark and even the last one doesn't end in a happily ev
